New Age Duty Free

New Zealand has had the inbound duty free shops for many years now.
Australia has them too. Passengers heading from the planes to customs and
carousels are channelled through them so they are hard to miss. DF Import
rules apply, but with a 3 L spirit allowance that's not too bad, and the
savings are very worth while. They are open to all incoming passengers
regardless, but you can spot the returning Kiwis in the know, staggering
along with yellow bags of goodies. The malts range is limited and I usually
go for Ardbeg and Laphroaig.
Which reminds me I was intending to comment on the Laphroaig 1/4 Cask v.
Cask Strength comparison after my wife ferried a 1/4 cask in for me recently.
I diluted the cask strength down to 48% for a direct comparison. I found
the nose of the 1/4 cask to be more complex, largely because of a sweeter
vanilla presence which presumably is the influence of the small cask. But
over all I think I'll stick to the Cask Strength as it has a more acrid
peaty bite to the mouthfull, which I rather like (plus the extra abv).
