SV: Cask Policy

Morning all

Someone said This lately-( maybe richard paterson but I'm not sure );- the scottish whisky distilleries find it harder and harder today to purchase bourbon barrels from the states and the barrels have become increasingly expensive because of the fact that the big indian whisky industry (which makes mostly rum but calls it whisky..;) is getting increasingly aware of the importance of good casks and are therefore buying up big quantities for their own production...

Anybody knows if this is a harmless rumour or if it has got any truth in?

Cheers

Angela Forsgren D'orazio

I heard from Jim McEwan saying that SWA(not quite sure about if it is SWA) will negociate cask purchasing for many distilleries. When I was at the Bruichladdich, we also get new barrels coming in, also from different ones.(Jack Danils and heven Hill.) He mentioned that some of the casks were sent to other Islay distilleries, Bruichladdich only got part of them.

Hi list,

In august 2004, I worked at Ardbeg for a week, and one of the things I did,
was unloading a truck of casks. Out of one truck there were casks of Jack
Daniels, Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, ... I mean, they don't only use Jack Daniels
casks, or casks from one specific producer.

Cheers,
Bert.

Going off at a slight tangent: I've seen empty casks at Ardbeg which clearly
stated they were from Jack Daniels. So I don't think the industry separates
'bourbon' from 'tennessee whiskey' when it comes to identifying what's been
in the cask prior to single malt.

Cheers, Lex
