Hi fellows,
IMHO experiments under the guard of the law are are fine thing. Fore sure
there are some finishes on the market, that were more marketing driven than
any other thing.
But in the end all these experiments have broaden our knowledge, and the
better ones succeeded, some are even nice.
As well I think that the responsible marketing people are meanwhile very
careful with their products and developements.
Some gimmicks will be tried but not neccessarely sold...
So occasionally I chose a finish, but usualy I prefere to finish me with
unfinished ;-)

you can see my thoughts on my blog under Arran / Bruichladdich new finishes.
I agree with all - some are good - looking forward to trying the Clynelish
but when they start finishing it in a tomato sauce bottle! It is all going a
bit too far.

Pete

My thoughts exactly, Rob...you hit the nail on the head!
Good whisky does not need finishing!!!
I do think experienced tasters will always revert to the original taste...
Even on whisky the saying: If it aint broke, dont fix it applies!
So enhancement...? Bollocks!!!
Its Just a change in scenery, and one that makes you realise damned well
how good you had it before!!!!

In the past there were sometimes some great whisky finishes. Nothing wrong,
some good excitement in tastes. Followed by a lot of so called
"marketing-finishes", nowadays called "enhanced". Interesting for sales,
only in the beginning, but don't taste them. Interested consumers are left
with a "Is that all"?
I feel that nowadays consumers/customers seems to go back to whisky in its
origin. Whenever a new normal release comes on the market, which tastes like
old fashioned whisky, you see the traditional consumers come back for it.
And so called finishes are left aside, just a one-off.
Is it just coincidental that old time whisky drinkers/lovers from the past
tend to dive into the older bottlings? That they even appreciate
old-fashioned blends more the the currents malts?
I always wondered why the old-fashioned whiskies weren't finished, in the
real meaning of that word, if they were that good. And I wonder, am I the
only one with these thoughts?
But then, I really appreciate the new Clynelish Distillers Edition. I hope
that this one isn't finished to fast...
