Too many choices?

I don't agree. I have too few choices. A serious malt fan reads reviews,
gets to know the styles and then picks and chooses based on budget and
availability, and uniqueness.
I have over 30 bottles in my cabinet. Some of those I consider "basic"
malts typical of several styles such as Macallan 12, Talisker 10, Lagavulin
16, Laphroig 10, Ardbeg 10. These offer great value (considering the
alternatives) and are malts I keep in stock. Most others are malts to
taste, get to know and then move on. Once I have consumed bottles of the
basic Glenkinchie, Oban, Scapa, Glenlivet, Cragganmore, Auchentoshan, etc. I
will not likely re-purchase these if I can find new bottles to explore. I
just picked up a bottle of Aberlour 15 Sherry Wood finish to replace my
Aberlour 10. The 10 was a nice, middle of the road sherry finish, but I
didn't replace it because the 15 Sherry was available. Had there been no 15
Sherry, I might well have waited until I could go to a different retailer
for a larger variety.
Granted, I may be the exception. But if I'm looking to buy a car, I want to
visit the biggest car lot in town, not the smallest. It's easy to pass by
the junk in which I have no interest.
