Oh...I really have waited my whole life for those "Two Glasgow businessmen "........
For the purpose of the Act "Scotch whisky" means whisky—
(b) which has been distilled at an alcoholic strength by volume of less than 94.8 per cent so that the distillate has an aroma and taste derived from the raw materials used in, and the method of, its production;
(c) which has been matured in an excise warehouse in Scotland in oak casks of a capacity not exceeding 700 litres, the period of that maturation being not less than 3 years;
I suppose these point are missing in calling it Whisky....Lex I totally agree with your point and I always wonder, when I see a vodka for 30€ (or more) being sold....

I assume it’s distilled to a higher abv level than is legal for whisky. Single malt vodkas have been on the market for several years (distilleries in the US and Italy, AFAIK), but probably not a single malt Scottish vodka. Still, for me they’re all marketing gimmicks, as the whole aim of distilling a vodka is to make it as pure as possible. So who then cares whether the base material is 100% malted barley or potatoes?

Did any one else notice this? Not sure what to make of it. Why isn't this whisky? I'm guessing that lies with not being matured in oak, etc. but we've all, I'm sure, tried fresh from the still spirit and nobody called it Vodka. There have even been attempts to get it into the market before with the likes of 'Single Scottish Spirit'. So what makes this vodka rather than fresh make malt?
Article follows:
Now - Single Malt Vodka!
Two Glasgow businessmen have come up with the latest drink sensation - the
world's first single malt Scottish vodka. It may not (yet?) have the global
sales of single malt whisky, but the production processes have been
borrowed from the classic Scotch. It uses a batch distillation process
using 100% Scottish malt barley, normally used in whisky distilling, plus
soft Highland water from the River Spey. It is also distilled five times in
traditional copper pot stills. Named "Valt", the new spirit goes on sale in
the New Year. It is clearly targeted at the younger age-group and has a
lion rampant on the front of the bottle.
