Maize in Single Supermarket malt?

Here in Oz we don't have supermarkets who bottle their own malts, so we
thought that we would try a range of Sainsbury, Marks & Sparks, Tesco and
Waitrose products. I have imported a few of those that Jim Murray rated
highly for tasting at my local whisky club. I presented the Waitrose 12 yo
Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky to the club this week, and was amazed to
read on the back of the cylinder "Allergens: Contains Maize".

Can anyone tell me how and why?
