Dave's reason was also the first thought I had, but I do agree with
Peter that the specific mention of maize is a bit odd .... Hm, as
someone who does shop at Waitrose occasionally, I ought to be able to
shed more light on this, but I'm afraid I can't ...
Cheers, Lex

Yes Dave, I thought of that, but thought that it should say "contains
gluten" or "contains wheat", or similar, as maize isn't the only grain
used for blends. My wife is celiac, so I am aware of the words required
here. Anyway someone else may be able to add further.

Here's a guess: just like foods that don't actually contain nuts, but
label their wares as "may contain peanuts or other nuts" or "processed
in facilities that also process peanuts and other nuts", their lawyers
may have advised this warning against the possibility of a lawsuit in
the event of an allergic reaction (from WHATEVER cause). The rationale
may be that since the product may have been distilled, bottled or
otherwise processed at a facility that handles grain and/or blended
whiskies (whose grain component CAN be distilled partly or wholly from
maize) -- or even trucked or vatted in vessels that are also used to
transport or vat grain or blended whisky -- that this would be a prudent
precaution. That's my two-cents....
Slainte,
Dave

Here in Oz we don't have supermarkets who bottle their own malts, so we
thought that we would try a range of Sainsbury, Marks & Sparks, Tesco
and Waitrose products. I have imported a few of those that Jim Murray
rated highly for tasting at my local whisky club. I presented the
Waitrose 12 yo Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky to the club this week,
and was amazed to read on the back of the cylinder "Allergens: Contains
Maize".
Can anyone tell me how and why?
