That IS a big question.

I include parts of a reply that I sent to an off-list correspondent . . .

So far as I can make out, a healthy diabetic diet is exactly the same as a healthy regular diet. One of the main objectives is to cut down on weight. Which means cutting down on calories. Which means that to have a dram or two, you have to make a deal with yourself: Trade a dram for something else.

Another factor is not to drink on an empty stomache, and not too close to bed-time.

So within this general picture I make my trade-offs: Less volume in dramming, only after food, but less food.

One immediate action item bursts to the fore, creating a hard tactical approach that is now a long-term strategy.
I now have no time or patience for crap whiskies. Indeed, medium quality whiskies are no longer an attractive option. If I must drink just a little, then what I drink is going to be the very best I can get my hands on.

(I gave away my medium stock to my naval son and his merry band of pirates).
