Alcohol and DB2

Joan, my wife, has diabetes type 2, which gives me no special qualification
to pontificate on the matter, but I will do anyway. She was told by the
doc. that she must keep her blood glucose/sugars count below a certain
level. He recommended weight loss, excercise and diet. The important
factor seems to be the rate at which foods deliver glucose to the blood,
and that can be kept in check by a diet that removes foods which have a
high Glycemic Index (a measurement of how fast 50g of carbohydrate in a
food raises blood glucose levels). If you want to know more about GI - try
googling. The diet works for my wife and the doc. says she is keeping the
db2 at bay without the need for medication.

According to a big GI book Joan has, alcohol is GI zero rated. It has no
impact on blood sugars, and spirits also are zero-rated, but not beer which
does contain carbohydrates. The big GI book also has the following to say
about booze intake.

"Alcohol interferes with glycogen resynthesis and lowers blood glucose
levels, sometimes to dangerous levels. Keep alcohol intake moderate - no
more than one to three standard drinks per day, and try to have two
alcohol-free days per week."
