Blind tastings

In experimenting with tasting procedure, I like to limit my tasting to 4
malts which is also a limit imposed by my lack of suitable, identical
glassware. I then will nose the glasses individually, clearing the nose
between glasses as best I can by allowing 15 seconds or so between each
glass while I take notes.

Only then do I begin tasting, comparing the notes with palate impressions.
I limit tasting while allowing the nose to develop, adding drops of water a
few at a time until the whisky "dies" in the glass. This may show me that
the dram is best neat, or maybe up to 50% water (which is extremely rare),
but usually somewhere in between. I use water to clear the palate between
glasses.

Perhaps not "by the book", but it works for me. I don't think I can give a
fair assessment of a whisky when my senses are either overloaded or dulled
by excess.
