Hi Davin,
Indeed, we don't agree on these sulphury notes. I tend to dennote them as off-notes. I know quite a lot of people like and/or even adore sulphury, rubbery, burnt tyres notes in their whiskies, but the more I enjoy whisky, the more I hate these notes. I would not say this particular Port Ellen has these notes coming from the sherry cask, I would more think they are in the skunk range like you put it.
A good H2H showing what I mean could be to compare these PE's :
Port Ellen 21yo 1979/2001 (50%, OMC, 618 b., Sherry cask)
Port Ellen 21yo 1982/2003 (50%, DL OMC, 216 b., Sherry Cask, Islay Whisky Shop Selection)
The last one showing clear notes of rubber and sulphur, while the 1979 sherry cask version does not show any.....next time we meet Davin we will make this H2H blind ok ? Alsace party 2007 would be a great occasion.

Luc,
You've got a great nose and a fine palate as I've witnessed many times, but you and I disagree on a certain sulphur note. To me, a Port Ellen, probably from a sherry cask, that shows notes of gunpowder, cordite, fireworks, etc. gets extra points not fewer. Are these the sherry notes you detected or are they more in the skunk cabbage range?
Rubber, tyres, pinewood, and cinammon all appeal to me as well.

If this Port Ellen is this one.........here my notes
Port Ellen 24yo 1982/2006 (60,4%, Bladnoch forum, Cask 2461, 644 Bts.)
Nose : Starts very buttery (the brown melting butter), and that typical 80's Port Ellen rubbery notes, the sulphury notes underneath, pinetree, pirelli tyres and varnish, not really my cup of tea I'm afraid (18)
Taste : Full and strong taste, you get vegetal rubbery notes mixed with fat mouldering buttery notes, quite some cinnamon and sulphury pinewood euhmmmm (18)
Finish : Long evasive...but ....you know.....buttery sulphury.....(18)
Balance/complexity : Yeah...I know...I'm not a big amateur of this PE profile...., I prefer the pure 70's style (18)
Total points : 72
I'm not a big fan of rubbery sulphury Port Ellen's I'm afraid......

Hi Ralph,
I am happy to bring some light in here. Bladnoch forum is the lively
discussions forum at the Bladnoch Distillery web site. But it offers more
than a place to post your opinions on whisky and almost any subject:
sometimes as a member of the forum you get the opportunity to buy whisky
very moderately priced from various distilleries, handbottled by the crew at
Bladnoch (sometimes assisted by forum members). So far we have had bottlings
of whisky from Tomatin, Macallan, Cragganmore, Tamdhu, Bladnoch (one rum
finished, one cognac finished), Caol Ila, Port Ellen (and we did not pay
£86) and two bottlings of Invergordon Grain. Most likely to be the next
issue is a bottling of Bladnoch produced after the revival. Keep in touch at
http://www.bladnoch.co.uk/
Cheers
Åke

Greetings all.
Last week in Skipton I saw a bottle of Por Tellen (OK, I know that its not
nice to make comments about people's accents, specially when you've got one
like mine!) - anyway, on with the story:
It was cask strength, at only 86 Pounds (including VAT) and had a very
minimalist label on it. Bottled by "Bladnoch Forum".
Can anyone enlighten me who this "Bladnoch Forum" is, and are there comments
on the bottling. Worth chasing after?
Ralph
