No, you CAN'T make Tennessee Whisky outside Tennessee -- though per US rules, Bourbon can be made anywhere in the US, not just Kentucky.? In the 1940's legislation was passed making "Tennessee Whiskey" a distinct designation (before that, it was legally indistinct from Bourbon).? My GUESS is this was done after some lobbying of lawmakers from Tennesseee. Anyway, "Tennessee Whiskey" HAS TO be made in Tennessee *AND* undergo the "Lincoln County Process" (charcoal filtering) to qualify as Tennessee Whiskey -- over and above the usual qualifications (grains, aging, barrels, etc.) that apply to Bourbon.?? So it seems to me that if you made some whisky at Jack Daniels or George Dickel distilleries in the usual way,?but chose *NOT TO* have the whisky undergo the "Lincoln County Process", you would?end up with?a beverage that met all the criteria for being classified, labelled and sold as "Bourbon".?
? I happen to think that everybody would have been better served if they hadn't made the additional legal distinction/classification in the 1940's for "Tennessee Whiskey".? They could have made and sold the same whiskies, and just put "Made in Tennessee" and/or "Produced using the Lincoln County [Charcoal Mellowing] Process" on the labels, if'n they felt like it, and called the whisky "Bourbon" -- like so many folks outside the U.S. do.? I would imagine that the "Tennessee Whiskey" is *NOT* distinctly classified from "Bourbon" in most-if-not-all places outside the U.S., and rightly so.? Sooooo many people think of Jack Daniels as a Bourbon Whiskey both within and outside the U.S. that in common usage the distinction seems (to me, at least) to be an artificial one....

It is my understanding that there are two LEGAL distilleries in Tennessee: Jack Daniels and George Dickel. I don't know when there was another commerical distillery there.?

I don't think you can make Tennessee whisky outside of that state. Do you know of an example of this??
