What would Burns have drunk?

With the anniversary of Robbie Burns birth coming up, I was asked this question. We all know that he liked to drink whisky but when I think about it, I doubt he drank whisky as the EU would define it.

We know he would not drink blends, since they were invented after his death. Was he drinking what we would know as vodka or "Scottish spirit" or did he drink aged spirits?

Anyone know?
