I'm for reducing the criterion to "being the in the stillhouse/stillroom" (as long as the stills are still installed, of course), for the reasons Bev gave.  Peering in the through the windows (as at Brora) doesn't count, but an inside walk-by would...

P.S.  Perhaps extra points for:  Tasting New Make,

                                           Tasting from Barrel(s) in Warehouse(s),

Participating in Any Phase of Operation (turning malt, filling, etc.)??
Plus for the "Big Daddies" an extra-wide or ornate notch for ownership/stake!!!  :)

hahaha

to me it has sth. of "ah look my car is faster than yours" . But you should actually make a real BELT, to be worn at Whiskyfairs....as kind of MM Regalia.....;-)

Hi all

Among the maniacs, we’ve had a discussion this past day on the virtual ‘Barnard Belt’. It all started as a bit of a joke, but got more (semi-)serious as time went on. Just as Scotland has Munros to climb, it has Barnards to visit. Talking distilleries of course. So visiting a distillery gets you a notch on your Barnard Belt. Wistfully roaming the distillery ground without actually visiting gets you a ‘wist’ in your Barnard Belt. Visiting distilleries outside Scotland gets you a pouch on your belt for each country you’ve visited at least one distillery in (pouches are coloured in a pattern matching the national flags of course). Suggestion was also to make it mandatory to touch the still for a notch from July 1 2007 onwards (before that time, joining an official tour will suffice).

So .... who’s got the most notches, wists and pouches in his/her belt? How’s your Barnard Belt looking relative to the rest of malt-dom? We’re sort of half-thinking of a web-page on MM where the number of notches, wists and pouches is listed for everyone who has contributed to MM with at least one e-pistle.
