Hi Lex - Some of the PLOWED crowd on previous trip had begun collecting those small cloth patches sold in tourist traps: we began calling them "merit badges" with the intent on if anyone had collected enough of them to actually make a tartan sash to be worn boy-scout style. I have patches from Islay, Skye and Orkney - don't know if they have them for specific counties on the "mainland" tho.

On another note I picked up a bottle of Rittenhouse 100 proof rye a couple of weeks ago. WOW!
If you're into American rye whiskey this is one to get. Said to be six years old and bottled at 50% abv (100 US proof) it's definitely a cheap thrill! I paid $15.99 but my main connection in Chicago has it listed for $11.99 and I think I need to stash a few bottles of this one.

Once again thanks to the Malt Maniacs and especially Konstantin for making the Malts-L migration go smoothly!

Slainte!
Tom Borschel

Hi all

Among the maniacs, we’ve had a discussion this past day on the virtual ‘Barnard Belt’. It all started as a bit of a joke, but got more (semi-)serious as time went on. Just as Scotland has Munros to climb, it has Barnards to visit. Talking distilleries of course. So visiting a distillery gets you a notch on your Barnard Belt. Wistfully roaming the distillery ground without actually visiting gets you a ‘wist’ in your Barnard Belt. Visiting distilleries outside Scotland gets you a pouch on your belt for each country you’ve visited at least one distillery in (pouches are coloured in a pattern matching the national flags of course). Suggestion was also to make it mandatory to touch the still for a notch from July 1 2007 onwards (before that time, joining an official tour will suffice).

So .... who’s got the most notches, wists and pouches in his/her belt? How’s your Barnard Belt looking relative to the rest of malt-dom? We’re sort of half-thinking of a web-page on MM where the number of notches, wists and pouches is listed for everyone who has contributed to MM with at least one e-pistle.
