Today a good number of distilleries are buying back casks they sold in the
past couple of decades as their own stocks are too low. Production has been
ramped up at many facilities but of course none of that output will be ready
to market for some years to come. Already we are seeing many 'holes' in the
OB offerings where you used to be able to get a 10-12yo there is a no age
statement and quick aging in small casks is coming into fashion.

And yes, most IBs now own distilleries as well since I think it is now
easier to swap casks than to buy them outright. Unless you have your own
source of swap materiel, you will soon be out of the loop. The question is
whether or not anyone will want swap casks of Edradour, Glengoyne, Benromach
or others in the future.

Tiered products from IBs are already happening. There are many distilleries
now missing from independents other than very old, very expensive
bottlings. Those who still have the old stock don't mind as they can simply
increase their prices.

Old scotch may soon be for collectors only, if that isn't already true.
Perhaps it is time to learn to appreciate a nice 8-12yo scotch whisky again
rather than pining for 30yos.
