AW: [MM-MALTS-L] Springbank

Don't get me wrong - some of Springbank's products are spectacular, but I have yet to find anyone who actually LIKES any of the Tokaji finished stuff (Springbank or Longrow). And the 2nd release of the Port finish in the wood expressions series was fairly nasty too. I do own shares of Springbank whisky that is still maturing there. I'm not knocking Springbank's malt, just their cask management of late.
It's a sign of the times; good sherry casks are exorbitantly expensive and even bourbon barrels are getting tough to source. It's likely that distillers are using the same casks over and over again and need to get some fresh wood in contact with the maturing spirit, necessitating the use of wine casks. And then there are the "boutique" malt producers (I won't mention any names) who roll out about a dozen (or more) wine finished expressions every year; the majority of the ones I've tried were not worth the asking price.
-------------- Original message from Lawrence Graham <lawrencegraham at shaw.ca>: --------------
It seems that Springbank will not distill next year for a period, expect a formal announcement from the distillery in the next few days. When I was at the distillery for 5 days 9-13th June I saw no evidence of "nasty cheap wine barrels " but only excellent sherry, port and bourbon barrels. And an over whelming desire to produce top rate malts.
A suspension of distilling for a period is hardly reason to run amok with speculation and harsh words, they deserve better.
Lawrence

I suspect they ran out of those nasty cheap wine barrels they were using to finish their malt in....
