"Important"? In the grand scheme of things, no.

But isn't knowing and caring about such things as the provenance of a dram 
what makes this interesting as a hobby and an experience?

Maybe he likes it so much that he would love to explore more from the same 
distillery.

Would that be a more "legitimate" motivation for asking a question that 
occurs to most of us here every time we run into a "mystery malt"?
